I set out on an experiment to interview dozens of people about their running shoe selection. I had learned that almost every single one of them picked shoes for reasons which were quite surprising.
Common selection choices were by color, looks, price (number 1 reason was they were on sale) and brand name. Some people bought shoes just because they were the latest model from a popular brand.
Only a couple out of the dozens I interviewed thought about whether or not the running shoes were right for them. No one had the slightest idea what overpronation was. Even those two that thought about the right shoe based it entirely on “feel”.
Choosing the right pair of running shoes should be mainly based on whether or not you overpronate. Overpronation causes a lot of problems especially to novice runners who are biomechanically inefficient. Unlike accomplished runners who have the ability to adjust their gait to minimize injury, the newbie runner who overpronates should be protected by his or her shoes.
If you excessively pronate chances are you are going to need a special pair of running shoes. You should look for shoes that are meant for people with flat feet. Flat footed people have a greater tendency to overpronate.
Furthermore, you should look for shoes that offer support. In the case of heavier runners who overpronate excessively, maximum support is needed. There are varying degrees of overpronation so it is best to determine whether or not you need a lighter support shoe or one that gives maximum support.
Shoe weight also affects your choice. Because of the support structures needed for most overpronator shoes they tend to weight a lot. This can be disastrous particularly to smaller female runners. You should find a pair of shoes that can support your ankle roll without it having to feel like bricks on your foot.
The pliability of your running shoes can affect your selection too. Shoes that cradle your feet when overpronating can be quite stiff. This might play a factor on some people who particularly like a more cushioned ride. There are shoes that offer overpronation support while giving a softer ride.
All in all, overpronation does play a big role in your selecting a pair of running shoes. Choosing the wrong type will cause the runner pain which may lead to injuries down the road. There is a great selection of shoes that cater to overpronators. Make sure to choose the right one for you.
